Google Ends Free Business Websites: March 2024 Deadline

Google's free website builder has helped thousands of small businesses get online. However, in March 2024, these websites will stop working. If your website address ends in business.site or negocio.site, you need to know about these changes.

What's Changing

Starting on March 1, 2024, Google will redirect visitors from these free websites to Google Business Profiles instead. By June 10, the websites will stop working completely. Any custom domain names bought through Google will need to be moved to a new website host.

Who This Affects

Check your website address right now. Open your site and look at the address bar at the top of your screen. If you see business.site or negocio.site at the end, this change affects you. This includes websites you might have set up through Google Maps or your Business Profile.

Keep Your Content Safe

Before making any changes, save everything from your current website. Download all your text, photos, business details and customer reviews. You'll need these for your new website.

Planning Your New Website

Building an essential business website typically costs between £300 and £1,000. Monthly hosting fees range from £5 to £30. Once web designers have your content, most can build a simple site within two weeks. Online shops or booking systems take longer and cost more.

Updating Your Details

Once you have your new website, you'll need to update your business information everywhere online. Start by listing places where your old website appears - business cards, email signatures, social media profiles and directory listings all need changing.

Looking After Your Google Profile

Your Google Business Profile becomes even more critical during this change. Keep it updated with current business hours, fresh photos, and quick responses to customer reviews to keep it active and visible in Google Search and Maps.

Steps to Take Now

Start by saving your current website content. Then, determine what kind of website you need and set a realistic budget. Give yourself enough time to update all your business listings before March. Test everything thoroughly before the old site stops working.
